How it all Began

My name is Rain. There is this whole story about my parents expecting a boy they hoped to call Enock… but then oops, a girl! For inspiration, they looked to the weather and found it appropriate to name me after it (Or maybe they were simply pulling my leg with the whole Enock thing, since I have three brothers after me with biblical names none of which is Enock… Hmm.) I also love the Lord with the fullness of my heart, my soul, and everything in me. And this blog, in it’s entirety is for the purpose of His glory, that is why it gives me so much joy to continue to add to the collections, and to have more and more people be touched by Him, even if for a moment… Those are the two essentials about me. So about the blog:

This blog started accidentally; I was listening to a popular gospel song in my dialect on YouTube and there were numerous requests for translations. Since the song was such a blessing to me, I went ahead and wrote the lyrics- first in my dialect and then attached the English translation. I didn’t have anywhere to place it so that it could bless other people and so I decided to create a blog. And then I tried about ten more songs in my dialect, tried others in languages I wasn’t too familiar with… and here we are.

Accuracy and integrity are my main goals – I try to be as accurate as humanly possible in making sure that the lyrics are accurate and/or message intended by the singer(s) is the same one that is passed on. Therefore should there be any errors, mispronunciations, and misprints, kindly point them out so that they can be corrected (commenting under the post in question is the way to go).

Navigating the site is easy and intuitive. I tag the singer(s)/group names and categorize the songs first by country and then by language. Some languages – most frequently English, French and Swahili are spoken in more than one country. In that event, I still tag the language and then the singer(s) country of origin. That way it is easy not only to find songs, but also discover new ones in one’s area/language of interest.

I give credit where it is due: If I copy lyrics from a website, I credit the source and provide a link. This applies also to lyrics submitted by users/passers-by (twitter handle is the default way to go unless a website link accompanies the submitted lyrics).

Suggestions and submissions are welcome. I would recommend suggestions be done on Facebook/Twitter (For easy tracking) – if this is not possible, then comment under on the Requests Page. Submissions are welcome in any platform convenient to you (email: africangospellyrics[at]gmail[dot]com if needed). Chords, encouragement, words of wisdom are welcome as well.

Follow this blog @africanpraise on Twitter or by direct subscription if you would like to be alerted when new lyrics are up. Alternatively, if you are on Facebook you can click here to like the page.

Here is to hoping that this blog blesses you and fills you the way it does for me.

Blessings,
Rain

    Dear Rain,

Thank you so much for this wonderful resource. I was really happy to finally stumble on your translation of “Ungefaniswe.”

Do you accept requests? I have been looking all over for the translation of “Heyi Baba” from the Children of God album by Chicco and Brenda. If you can, please post a translation of the song. Its such a moving song, I can feel it in my bones that it has a great message.

    Thank you!

I know the song you are talking about. We sing it in our church. Here’s a slower version I found on Youtube with the lyrics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSBvvlg-cVM

    Thula Sizwe – Hush nation
    Ungabokala- Do not cry
    Ujehova Wakho – Our God
    Uzokunqobela – Will protect us

    Inkululeko – Freedom
Sizoyithola – We will get it
    Ujehova Wakho – Our God
    Uzokunqobela – Will protect us

    Hope this helps

    Dear Rain

You may wish to check out the website of Quire Colchester on You Tube – they are a community choir in England who love to sing songs and hymns from Africa. You may wish to add some of their renditions to your beautiful collection.

Also, there is a beautiful South African hymn by the Universal Gospel Choir called Akekho Ofana Na Jesu – which you may wish to add to your inspiring collection.

In this deeply troubled world of today where youngsters from all over the world are departing away from God and great cultural traditions, your website offers a sanctuary for prayer by grieving parents

Wow, I am trying to learn kiswahili as I plan to volunteer there. I find learning through song much easier. But this is impossible if the lyrics, even if not translated are not available as they sing too fast for me to try and translate. I have been scouring the internet for days and finally stumbled upon this. Thank you so much for making this available to people like me who want to learn using wholesome music. It is such a blessing.

I googled out for lyrics of a song by the group “joyous celebration” and this site was one of the suggestions. When I first saw “African Gospel Lyrics” I was like OMG, I have found that one place I have always wanted. Most of the south african songs in native languages to which I always struggled to get the lyrics and meaning were found here. In sum; thanks to this blog. It is a blessing and may the brains behind this be blessed in Jesus’ name. AMEN

the meaning of the song is : temptation is biter than any worse thing you can imagine such as death in family, orphans, poverty and etc.
the fight that i am fighting is hard if it was in the fresh i would call my closer family , friends and the higher authority people to help me.
This is the brief meaning of the the song .. i left my country when i was 7 yrs …. i hope it will help. stay blessed

Oh my God I miracoulously stumbled upon this site. I had been going through a difficult time and I happened to come across Soweto Gospel choir’s songs on youtube. I really had no idea what they were singing whenever they sang in Zulu or Sotho as I only understand Swahili and English.
But God is amazing…I kept listening to the Soweto choir’s songs for like 3 weeks and I finally wondered what they were singing. Today I looked up “Joko yahao” and I was AMAZED and I was like WOW I finally understand why the song deeply ministered to me. I had no idea before but by God’s power everything they were singing about the song was all about my situation.
Hallelujah may God bless you and expand you as I am being blessed with singing along in praise and worship along with my fellow African brothers and sisters!!!
Happy Holidays and may you and this blog prosper in the new year!
